Remi and Laetitia, French volunteers

We are two French volunteers working in the reserve of Rebala since the beginning of july 2005. Our European Voluntary Service will finish at the end of june 2006. The work in the reserve is a great opportunity for us to discover the Estonian culture, history and way of life. Estonia is particularly interesting for us. On one hand, this country is totally different from France : small its traditions are not forgotten even if it used to be a part of the USSR. On the other hand we have discovered many common things between our lands : for exemple, one French children's song has been translated into Estonian and is now known by every Estonian as a traditional Estonian song ! These pictures aim at describing our works and leisures.

Saha chapel

Saha chapel

The chapel of Saha. Our first work during this summer was to make a map of the old cemetery which is around an old medieval chapel.

Saha crosses

Saha crosses

Most of the crosses were old and reading the names of the people buried underneath was hard for us. As we didn't knew how to speak Estonian, reading the names and the epitaphs was hard !

Laetitia's longest job, she is still working on it after many months, is to "clean" digital pictures. These pictures from the 1930's are part of the museum's collections and need to be scanned.

Remi's first job after the cemetery's map was to locate sacred stones all around the reserve and to take their GPS coordinates. During the first days, Laetitia (seen on the picture) accompagnied him.

Cup mark

Cup mark

The sacred stones were marked, centuries ago by pre-christian Estonians. The cup marks were related to fertility rituals.

The northern part of the reserve was a phosphorite mining area during the first Estonian republic and the sovietic times. Nowadays remain only long corridors open to everyone.
